The Place and the Mismatched Boxes

This is an eyewear shop located in a shopping mall in Kurashiki. The space is simply a row of rectangular boxes, all different sizes and proportions, lined up on the floor. Each box is made of cypress timber and plywood, with only one of its six sides open. The mismatched square boxes fit in or out of place depending on the wall or pillar in their location. When we embrace the incongruity that arises in their relationship with the space as an attraction in itself, one possibility emerges: Repurposing them for use in a different location. In fact, we're currently rolling out this design to other shops, and we're having fun designing them, wondering how the mismatched boxes will interact with each slightly different location.

その場所と不揃いな箱

倉敷のショッピングモールの中にあるメガネ店です。サイズもプロポーションもバラバラな四角い箱が床に置かれて並んでいるだけの空間です。どの箱も、檜の角材と檜の合板でできていて、6面の内1面だけが開いています。不揃いの四角い箱は、その場所にある壁や柱との関係で、うまく収まったり収まらなかったりするのですが、そのような場所との関係の中で生まれるチグハグさも含めたできごと自体を魅力として捉えるとき、一つの可能性が浮かび上がります。それは別の場所への転用です。実際、このデザインは、他の店舗にも展開中で、それぞれ少しずつ異なる場所と不揃いな箱がどのような関係を見せてくれるのか楽しみながら設計に取り組んでいます。
